RICE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION TEAMS HAVE RAISED OVER $1 BILLION IN CAPITAL & EXIT DOLLARS
 



Highlights:

One company has raised $100+ million in capital funding.

9 companies have raised over $30 million each. 7 are still in business. The other 2 exited successfully.

21 companies have raised more than $10 million each. 20 of which are still in business or exited successfully.

78 companies have raised over $1 million each. 71 of these companies or 91% are still in business or exited successfully.

100 companies have raised over half a million dollars each. 87% are still in business or exited successfully.

Finalists, the teams placing 1st to 6th over the past 13 years, have raised $370+ million in funding. Thus, 18% of all RBPC competitors have raised 44% of all the funding.

RBPC TEAMS HAVE RAISED $844 MILLION IN CAPITAL FUNDING, $244 MILLION, LAST YEAR ALONE

Since the RBPC’s inception in 2001, 437 teams competed. Of these, 253 or 58% launched. Of these, 156 or 62% are still in business or exited successfully.

Of the 437 teams, 156 or 36% are successful companies.  145 are alive and well today. Another 11 made successful exits. An additional 7 teams continue to develop their technology and intend to launch soon.

Of the 42 teams competing in 2013, 26 or 62% are already in business, and another 4 or 10% are planning to launch soon. In one year, the teams representing the 2013 competition have raised almost $9 million. 16 of the 2013 teams have already raised over $100 thousand each.

As the Rice Business Plan Competition grows and matures over the years, so too have the companies that participate. A growing number of RBPC alumni companies are making successful exits. 

 

Successful Exits 2014
A video advertising management and monetization company, Auditude was acquired by Adobe Systems in November 2011. Auditude had previously spun out a company called IntoNow that was acquired by Yahoo in early 2011. The total value of the two exits was reported to be about $140 million.

BlackLocus | 2011 RBPC | Carnegie Mellon University | Acquired by The Home Depot in 2012
BlackLocus developed a SaaS price optimization platform. It was acquired by The Home Depot in December 2012, a mere 20 months after competing at the RBPC. BlackLocus has become The Home Depot’s Innovation Lab.

EcoLight | 2012 RBPC | Dartmouth College | Sold in July 2013
EcoLight installed residential & commercial energy efficiency modifications as investments instead of purchases. It was sold in July 2013 and continues to operate as EcoLight in New Hampshire.

Power2Switch | 2010 RBPC | University of Chicago | Acquired by Choose Energy in 2013
Power2Switch created a platform to compare energy providers. It was acquired by San Francisco-based Choose Energy, a Kleiner Perkins (KPCB) Portfolio Company in September 2013. Choose Energy is an online marketplace for electricity customers.

Semprus BioSciences | Finished 2nd in the 2007 RBPC | Massachusetts Institute of Technology | Acquired by Teleflex in 2012
Semprus developed technology to prevent infection from medically implanted devices. In June 2012, it was acquired by Teleflex, a Pennsylvania-based medical device company for a reported $30 to $50 million.
